There I was across the bay walking not an hour ago

To catch myself here,
To fill the places in me emptied of your presence
My life’s landscape emptied of those I once knew, without knowing as my people
Washed out to that sea and emptied of their own lives
Taken like so much cliff face fallen
On the outgoing tide of Time, that vast majority element
That holds us all within this very moment.
Standing on the bridge my inner eye rests upon places where
The people I lived amongst lived as my organs live
Amongst one another deep within my overcoat of membrane and skin
All who once were part of me and I of them
No more mine now than my own life feels is mine
Stranger in it that I am
Filled with the flotsam and jetsam of other people’s lives
I no longer recognise nor truly fit within my own.
As here I stand now empty, alone
Filled with longing for the home of belonging I once knew
The tides turn, turn once more
Returning I turn, walk on.

She is currently the Chief Editor of Brickfields Law Review and has been instrumental in establishing a meaningful connection between law, philosophy, the arts and literature. Her current research interests and activities include the writings of Michel Foucault, Friedrich Nietzsche, the philosophy of writing, creativity and eroticism. Milvi Martina Piir is an Estonian writer and historian. She has an MA degree in history from the University of Tartu and she is currently pursuing her PhD in Educational Sciences at Tallinn University. She is an author of innovative history textbooks, workbooks and teachers' books for schools of general education and works as the senior specialist in history at the National Examinations and Qualifications Centre. She also works as a lecturer in the history of pedagogy at the University of Tallinn and is a member of the Baltic Association of Historians of Pedagogy. For her PhD dissertation, she studies the impact of the nationalist-traditionalist history teaching in the period of Estonia's regaining of independence on the practical understanding of history among the younger generation.
As a writer, Milvi Martina Piir is an author of several novels and the winner of the national novel competition in 2008.
Writing compels me to face my thoughts, however complex and muddled they are, shift some to the left, others to the right, some upwards, others downwards, until they form part of a coherent image of reality - my image of reality. I write because I enjoy verbalizing my thoughts so that in the end, every action or inaction is justified intelligently. If not, it is at least given an identity. By attributing reasons for every phenomenon in my environment, I feel empowered by my ability to think in a coherent and structured manner. The existence of such logos or order in my life renders every action and thought meaningful. Writing thus makes existence and 'beingness' meaningful.
